Handing over of Humanitarian assistance in Galle

Consul General of India, Hambantota Mr. Dipin P. R commenced distribution of rice, milk powder in Galle District on 7th June 2022 at Divisional Secretariat, Galle Four Gravits in the presence of Mr. Shantha Weerasinghe, District Secretary, Galle, Mrs. Himali Rathnaweera,  Divisional Secretary, Galle Four Gravits and other officials.

02.       This humanitarian assistance programme will benefit around 47860 families in Galle district alone. This is a part of Government of Tamil Nadu's assistance to the people of Sri Lanka, comprising 40,000 MT of rice and 500 MT of milk powder, which is being distributed across the island currently. Speaking at the occasion, Consul General mentioned that the Indian humanitarian assistance is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Neighborhood First” policy.

03.       India has been extending expeditious support to Sri Lanka in the recent past. Overall economic assistance which stands close to USD 3 billion in 2022 alone has been of various kinds – USD 1 billion credit line for essentials; USD 500 million credit line for purchase of petroleum products; USD 400 million bilateral currency swap; and over USD 1 billion under the Asian Clearing Union Framework.  The USD 1 billion credit line is operational and 16,000 MT of rice has already reached Sri Lanka, inter alia other items, under this credit line.

04.       Consulate General of India Hambantota has always been forthcoming to assist the people of Sri Lanka in Southern Province and Monaragala District during challenging time. On 22nd April 2022 the Consulate handed over dray rations & and other essential domestic supplies to low income families in Hambantota area as an “Awurudu Gift” from people of India. Also last year During the Covid 19 pandemic situation, Consulate General of India, Hambantota distributed dry ration and essential materials to the families in Galle, Tissamaharama, Buttala, Madampagama, Hikkaduwa, Ratgama & Hambantota.
