Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM) Special Fortnight Celebrations, 1st June -16th June 2023

As a part of celebrating 75 years of India’s Independence (Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav), Consulate General of India, Hambantota organized an AKAM Special fortnight from 1st June – 16th June encompassing different events at Southern Province & Monaragala District.

02.          Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav is an initiative of the Government of India to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of progressive India and the glorious history of her people, culture and achievements. India’s Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on 12th March 2021 formally launched India@75 celebrations at Sabarmathi Ashram in Gujarat, 75 weeks before 15th August 2022 and will end on 15th August 2023.

03.          The celebrations started with a Special Yoga Event on 1st June 2023 at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Ruhuna with the participation of more than 500 Students.

04.          On 2nd June 2023 an “AKAM & Mission Life Cycle Rally” was organized with the participation of Hambantota local community. The rally was flagged off by Mr. W.C.S.K. Rathnayaka Additional District Secretary, Hambantota & was led by the Consul General Mr. Dipin P.R.  along with officials of the Consulate school children & public to  convey the message of using bicycle as an affordable, reliable and  environment friendly means of transportation promoting health & wellness. 

05.          On 5th June 2023, CGI Hambantota organized an “AKAM Film Screening ” & a Photo Exhibition of Unsung Heroes for the Monaragala Tamil Community.  On 7th June 2023, a Beach Cleaning programme was organized as a part of AKAM Celebration. The event also coincided with World Ocean day which was celebrated on 8th June. The beach cleaning programme was held with the participation of officials of the Consulate, officials of Marine Environment Protection Authorities, officials of Hambantota District & Divisional Secretariat & Officials of Hambantota Disaster Management Center.

06.          On 9th June 2023 CGI Hambantota organized a kite flying event at Hambantota beach with the participation of officials of the Consulate and Hambantota local community.  On 16th June 2023, an “India Corner”  was inaugurated in collaboration with Matara District Chamber of Commerce & Industry at Chamber's premises by the Consul General of India Hambantota, Mr. Dipin P.R. in the presence of  Matara Divisional Secretary, Mr. Sumudu Gunarathne, Mr. Metta Vidanagamaachchi Chairman of Matara District Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Ms. K.N.Kaushalya Kumari, , Regional manager of Central Bank, Mr.Nihal Kaluarachchi, President of Trade Union Matara and other Directors of Matara District Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
