Beach Cleaning Program at Hambantota

A “Beach Cleaning Programme” at Hambantota has been organized by Consulate General of India in Hambantota on 1st August 2025. The program was organized in collaboration with Hambantota District Secretariat, Marine Environment Protection Authority, Sri Lankan Navy, Municipal Council of Hambantota, Women’s Federation, Hambantota District Chamber of Commerce, Hambantota Traders’ Association, Hambantota Young Men Buddhist Association, Hatton National Bank, Nursing Students, School-students as well as members of civil society and local residents of the town. Mr. D.A. Gamini, Hon’ble Mayor of Hambantota also participated in the event.

  1. The program is aimed to promote Government of India’s “Swachhata Hi Sewa” Abhiyan (translated as "Cleanliness is Service") and the Government of Sri Lanka’s “Clean Sri Lanka” campaign both of which prioritize environmental sustainability as national goals. As part of our shared responsibility, this initiative aims to support this vision by contributing to a cleaner, greener Sri Lanka through collective action.
  2. The "Swachhata Hi Sewa" Abhiyan, a flagship cleanliness campaign of the Government of India, has increasingly found resonance beyond Indian borders, fostering regional cooperation in environmental sustainability and public hygiene. This cooperation aims to strengthen the historic and cultural ties between the two nations, while jointly promoting the principles of "Swachh Bharat" (Clean India) and “Clean Sri Lanka” in a South Asian context.
  3. These efforts not only reflect India's commitment towards Gandhian ideals of cleanliness and civic responsibility, but also promote people-to-people connections and shared values of environmental stewardship. By involving volunteers, students, and civil society organizations from local community, the initiative strengthens bilateral relations while contributing to the broader Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in areas related to sanitation, health, and sustainable communities.
