Establishment of 10
Mini-Bharat Corners in Hambantota District
The
Consulate General of India in Hambantota extended its support to the
Lunugamwehera Pradeshiya Sabha in Hambantota district of Southern Province of
Sri Lanka in establishing 10 Rural Libraries and Mini-Bharat Corners across
Lunugamwehera.
2. This initiative was undertaken as part of
National Literature Month and Reading Month celebrations in Sri Lanka. These
Bharat Corners set up in rural libraries are expected to serve as valuable
resources for local communities enabling them access to books and motivate
readers of all ages. This is also aimed at cultivating the habit of reading and
knowledge-sharing in rural communities.
3. In an inauguration ceremony held on
22.11.2024, Mr. Harvinder Singh, Consul General presented books in Sinhala
language for the rural libraries as requested by the Pradeshiya Sabha. In addition to this, books and reading
material procured from India was also handed over. The event was also attended
by Mr. I.L. Wickramanayaka, Divisional
Secretary Lunugamwehera; Ms. Dilini Vithana, Assistant Local Government
Commissioner and Mr.. Nirodha Prasad Koralage, Deputy Director of Local
Government.
4. This collaboration highlights Government
of India's commitment to supporting educational and cultural initiatives that
strengthen ties between India and Sri Lanka.
