On 17 January 2026, the Consulate General of India, Hambantota celebrated Thai Pongal, the traditional harvest festival of Tamil communities, at Sri Muththu Mariyamman Kovil. The festival is a vibrant expression of gratitude for a bountiful harvest and reflects centuries-old cultural traditions shared between India and Sri Lanka.
The event was graced by, Hon. Lal Premanath, and other dignitaries, along with members of the local community. Participants actively engaged in traditional rituals, offered prayers, and partook in festive customs, making the celebration a lively occasion that fostered cultural appreciation, strengthened community bonds, and highlighted the enduring ties between India and Sri Lanka.
